Enjoy a Walk to a Madeira Waterfall
This walk takes place in the middle of the Rabaçal valley, one of our most prized nature attractions in the Madeiran Laurissilva forest, the largest laurel forest in the world!
The first big attraction is the Fonte do Lajeado lagoon. Tucked away amongst the dense vegetation, this lagoon is the source of all the levadas in the Rabaçal region.
Along the path, you can find stretching views of the Rabaçal valley, small waterfalls and the sound of some of our endemic birds. You can find some of the largest and oldest endemic plants, such as laurel, blueberry and heather.
The main attraction is the Lagoa do Vento waterfall and lagoon. Formed by the elements hundreds and thousands of years ago, this 100 m waterfall cascades down the volcanic rock formation amongst the green ferns, mosses, grasses and bushes surrounding the environment.
Possibly the most underrated hike on the island, away from the big crowds, this is a must-do for all nature lovers! It’s a moderate, 15-km walk, including a fair amount of steps to overcome as well as a tunnel, flat and spacious. It takes approximately 4.5 hours to complete, ranging in altitudes of 900 m to 1290 m above sea level.
