We have set up The Big Walk to make it as beautiful, adventurous and authentic as possible but it is not meant to be “easy”. You will not complete the journey without good preparation. If you´re unsure, Level 1 may be the hike for you
The minimum age for the trek is 18.
On day 1 we will pick you up from the capital, Funchal. You need to arrive the day before and organise your own airport transfers and accommodation for that night. We can help you with that.
Waterproofs (pants and jacket)
Backpack (20 litres)
Extra money for lunches, snacks, dinners and drinks.
No, you can carry what you need with you on the day, the rest is transported with our Land Rover to the next location.
We have introduced The Big Walk in the “summer months” where it is warmer in Madeira but we cannot control the weather. Up in the mountains, during the camping days it can get cold (5 – 10 degrees celsius) and of course it can rain during the night or the day. If the weather is not permitting, we will adjust accordingly and make other provisions as to not lose out on the adventure.
During our hotel stays we will have the usual “hotel breakfasts” and on camp days we will be making our own campside breakfasts with fresh, wholesome food to give us energy during the hike. The camping part of the adventure is really special for us and we make sure the food reflects that. The lunches will usually be picnic sandwiches, fruit and energy bars and the dinners will range from campsite barbecues to local restaurants to hotel restaurants to give you a full spectrum of local Madeiran gastronomy.
We will be staying in small, boutique hotels outside of the capital, along our hiking route. The hotels are carefully selected according to our usual quality standards. During the camping each guest or couple will have their own tent which will be waterproof and spacious. The campsites will be prepared with enough food and snacks, drinks and amenities for a comfortable stay.
Nope. There are no snakes, no dangerous animals and no venomous spiders. Madeira is one of the best places in the world to camp!
