7 of the Best Photo Spots on the East of MADEIRA

Photography has become an ever so important part of modern travel that most of our guests very often want to know the best photo spots in Madeira or better yet, the best instagram spots of Madeira. So instead of copy-pasting the “top 10” best spots in Madeira, we thought we would take 3 photographers on a photo mission of our favourite spots and basically this is what we got, enjoy!

1 Pico do Areiro

The third highest peak of the island, Pico do Areiro offers massive mountain views in all directions with all sorts of props and angles. The best way to photograph here would be either sunrise or sunset with our favourite being sunrise. We left Funchal 1h30 before sunrise to ensure we got there with time to spare in case we had to dash off somewhere else for a plan B. Fortunately for us, the weather was perfect and the photographers had a blast.

2 Chao das Feiteiras

One of our “secret” plan B spots, this little plateau has great potential for a sunrise photoshoot as well as a great place to learn how to fly a drone. Also a perfect picnic spot, barbecue spot or camping spot as well, one of our favourite places in Madeira without a doubt!

3 Ribeiro Frio

Ribeiro Frio, lovely translated to “cold river” is so much more than just the touristic, conveyer belt attraction but actually a world of hidden corners with all sorts of beautiful angles and scenes. We visited the short levada walk, which is often missed by the casual traveler, just before the entrance to the trout farm, which leads to a small waterfall and beautiful forest section. There’s also the levada dos balcoes as well as the balcoes viewpoint, all of which make for great photography!

4 Faial

A typical north coast rural village, Faial offers majestical views to the village with the peaks towering above, an absolute pleasure for land scape photographers. Most of the famous “instagrammers” love coming out here to take photos of the old bridge by drone, one of the many beautiful props available in this quiet rural village.

5 Santana

Famous for the A-frame Santana House, Santana is rich with culture and history and abundant with colours. We spent a short time in the village but truth be told you could spend a whole day discovering Santana and all it’s riches. For the sake of photography, we stopped off at the better-designed, touristic houses of Santana just because they look a little bit prettier. If this was a cultural stop, we would of course explore the more authentic, less touristic houses which aren’t souvenir shops and were actually lived in, but for the sake of photography, this is a great spot!

6 Quinta do Furao

Most of you may already know how much we love our favourite hotel in Madeira, Quinta do Furao. Not only is it perched on one of the best little pieces of land in Madeira, with some of the best views of the north east coast as well as the highest peaks of Madeira, this perfect little countryside quinta has it all. With a new chef and a seasoned staff of professionals, the restaurant is of the highest caliber. If you’re looking for an interesting place to stay with all the perks, this is it. In our case, it was time to take a break, have a meal and then take some shots around the hotel which came out perfectly.

7 Miradouro do Guindaste

Otherwise known as “the crane” by all the instagrammers, this seaside cliff is an absolute treasure for creative photographers. One of the best sunrise spots on the island, around the summertime, this little cliff is the scene of many famous photographs of our slice of heaven. The last spot of the day, I let the photographers do their thing while I took a quick break in the Land Rover, after all we had been working since 5:45AM!
