Is the Weather Good in Madeira? A Local Guide Tells You the Truth (2025 Update)
Let’s start with the question every single person asks me…
“Is the weather good in Madeira?”
Short answer? Yes — but not in the way you think.
Long answer? Well… welcome to microclimate island.
I’m a local guide here in Madeira. I’m out on the road almost every day, driving through forests, mountains, valleys, and coastlines. I chase the sunshine for a living. Literally.
And after 15+ years of doing this, guiding thousands of people around the island, I can tell you this:
👉 Madeira has incredible weather.
👉 It also has unpredictable weather.
👉 And the apps are wrong about 60% of the time.
If you’re planning a trip, or you’re already here and refreshing your weather app every five minutes (don’t worry — we’ve all done it), this guide is going to save you a lot of stress.
Let’s break it down properly — no sugar coating, no marketing fluff.
🌍 Madeira Is the King of Microclimates
This is the first thing you need to know:
Madeira is full of microclimates.
If you don’t like the weather where you’re standing, drive 10 minutes. It’ll probably be completely different.
North vs South
-
South Coast
Sunny. Warm. Calm. This is where most people live and where most tourists stay. -
North Coast
Wild. Moody. Greener. More rain. -
East vs West
East is usually sunnier and more stable.
West is dramatic — especially Fanal and Porto Moniz.
The mountains change everything
We’ve got mountains over 1,800m high. They act like a giant weather wall.
A cloud on one side doesn’t cross over to the other.
That’s why your weather app is confused.
It sees a bit of cloud somewhere and thinks, “Right, cloudy everywhere!”
Meanwhile, I’m standing in blazing sunshine.
☀️ So… Is the Weather Actually Good?
Yes. It’s very good — but you need to know where to go.
Madeira has:
-
Mild winters
-
Warm summers
-
Stable temperatures all year
-
A lot of sunshine — especially in the south and east
-
A refreshing ocean that regulates the climate
You don’t come to Madeira for predictable, boring weather.
You come for dramatic clouds, crazy sunsets, sunbeams breaking through mountain valleys… and perfect days on the south coast even when the north looks like Scotland.
📅 Madeira Weather: Month by Month (Honest Breakdown)
January – March
Cooler mornings. Greener landscapes. Great waterfalls.
North gets more rain. South stays pretty solid.
Sunsets can be insane this time of year.
April – June
My personal favourite.
Everything stabilises — warm days, cool nights, perfect hiking weather.
Mountains show off. Pico do Arieiro is unreal in spring.
July – September
Summer proper.
Blue skies. Hot days. Calm ocean.
It doesn’t get silly-hot like Portugal’s mainland — Madeira’s ocean cools everything nicely.
Perfect jeep touring weather.
October – December
The “shoulder season.”
Still warm. Still sunny.
A little more unpredictable, but the south coast continues to deliver.
Great time for photography — moody mountains with bursts of light.
❓ Common Weather Questions I Get Every Single Week
1. “Is the weather good tomorrow?”
Here’s the truth:
I don’t look at just one weather app.
I check multiple points around the island.
Then I compare it with what I saw TODAY and what I have seen in the past — because experience beats forecasts here.
Forecasts give you a general idea.
Your guide gives you the actual one.
Most days?
It’s good somewhere. And with a jeep, we know where “somewhere” is.
2. “Which side of the island has the best weather?”
Short answer: South + East.
Long answer:
-
South is the safest bet all year.
-
East often gets the cleanest, brightest mornings.
-
North is beautiful — but it’s not afraid to throw a bit of drama (clouds, rain, mist).
This is why our Full Day East Tour is the safest “sunshine bet” most of the year.

the mountains on our East Madeira Jeep Tour.
3. “Will it be raining everywhere?”
No. Almost never.
It might rain in Santana.
It might be cloudy in Cabo Girão.
And I might be standing in bright sunshine on the south coast laughing at my weather app.
This island is too varied for “is it raining everywhere?” to ever be yes.
4. “Will weather ruin my jeep tour?”
Honestly? 99% of the time, no.
Some rain can actually make the forests magical.
Clouds at Pico do Arieiro can look unreal.
The north coast with waves? Incredible.
And if the weather isn’t great in one area — we move.
Jeep tours give you that freedom.
Hike tours need one location.
Jeep tours? We’ve got dozens of options.
5. “What should I pack?”
Simple:
-
T-shirt
-
Light sweater or hoodie
-
A thin waterproof jacket (just in case)
-
Comfortable shoes
-
Sunscreen (yes, even in winter)
-
A hat
- Sunrise gear – warm jacket, beanie, gloves if need be.
-
A sense of humour
Madeira weather isn’t something to control.
You just enjoy it for what it is.
🧭 How Local Guides Really Predict Weather
This is where experience comes in.
A weather app can’t see:
-
cloud depth
-
mountain winds
-
where the sun is breaking through
-
which side will clear first
-
how fast weather is moving
But after years of driving every corner of this island, we know.
We read the weather like a book.
We know where to go.
We know when to wait 5–10 minutes.
And we know when to change the plan completely.
This is why people hire local guides — to get the best version of Madeira, not the default one.
🌈 Final Answer: Yes — The Weather in Madeira Is Good
It’s good, it’s interesting, it’s dramatic, it’s sunny, it’s moody, it’s beautiful…
It’s Madeira.
And part of the magic is that it can change in minutes.
If you want a tour where we pick the best weather, the best moments, and the most beautiful spots on the day, then come join us.
